Led Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation-funded initiative at the Zambia Daily Mail to train journalists in health reporting and to develop the first dedicated media health desk at a major metropolitan newspaper in the nation. Led team working with limited resources producing special projects on impacts of HIV, cancer and malaria in Zambia that received national recognition; Developed a health journalist resource that included an interactive preferred language guide followed by 11,000 readers.

Palm Beach Post – Editor, Staff Writer, West Palm Beach, Florida | Jan. 1998 – Aug. 2008Reporter at South Florida major metropolitan daily newspaper, covering justice, environment, and health beats. Awarded funding from the International Center for Journalists and the Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting for a multimedia reporting project on HIV in the Caribbean featuring documentaries on Fareed Zakaria’s Foreign Exchange, an interactive website, and a series of feature articles examining HIV challenges in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and South Florida. The series led to the first U.S. policy allowing federal funding to support infectious diseases responses in overseas prisons. Additional high-impact journalism included leading a multi-reporter project on law enforcement use of stun guns in South Florida that led to the development of the first county-wide policies governing Taser deployment by officers. A series on the impacts of ocean sewage dumping on the local reef system led to legislation ending the practice.
