I fulfilled the role of both Scrum Master and Java Team Lead for a small team which was focused on bespoke, web solutions for retail clients.We were doing some wizardry with GWT, PostgreSQL, Spring, Hibernate, Gradle and dropping this Java solution into Tomcat servers running on Linux!

I was entrusted with my first team leading gig after I repeatedly got involved in sorting out team crises using my own initiative.I was part of a distributed team where we worked with Momentum developers in Pretoria on a single code-base and had to make sure that our objectives and development was always aligned.Led my team through multiple projects where I was heavily involved in getting my hands dirty and coding on platforms based on Java and integrating with Tibco Staffware, CORBA, Vignette Document Management and other bespoke systems developed by our client (Momentum).

I cut my teeth on COBOL like systems dealing with the fallout of the Y2K bug.After two years I had outgrown the COBOL environment so my awesome boss chucked me into the deep end where I joined a Java team and had to learn the language on the job.For three years I developed multiple systems for various clients using Java and J2EE technologies where I was part of a distributed team who worked in Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg.I was also able given the opportunity where I trained internal staff in HTML, JavaScript and object orientated programming in addition to my programming job.
