Aug 2013 - Present

Database Administrator

El Dorado Hills, Ca, Us

Initially upgraded most SQL Servers from 2008 R2, 2012, and/or 2014 to SQL Server 2016 in addition to upgrading Windows Servers from 2003, 2008, 2008 R2, and 2012 to 2012 R2 in the first and second quarter of 2017. Standardized the environment with drive locations, backup schedules, and security such as setting SPNs and utilizing Kerberos. Prior to the upgrade, implemented replication to copy data from one server to another for reporting purposes to replace a manual backup and restore process. Fixed problem with backup sizes being too large and also implemented Always On Availability Group to replace the replication once upgrade was complete. In the fourth quarter of 2017, upgraded most of the non-production servers to SQL Server 2017 and started implementation of upgrading Windows Servers to 2016. Introduced the use of SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) to source control the databases. Standardized on SSDT to source control databases, SSIS, SSRS, and SSAS projects. Upgraded all SSIS projects to SQL Server 2016 project deployment model and standardized storing SSIS packages in the SSISDB Catalog utilizing project parameters when necessary. Other database duties were to help solve performance issues, rewrite queries, help solve database contention issues, and keep servers updated. Also upgraded Team Foundation Server (TFS) from 2010 to 2017 and led the change from the old XAML-based build process to the new build process. Secondary duties were to help other staff with other IT issues that may have popped up.

Co-Founder

Equitable Transportation

As a startup, my tasks were to secure funding for equipment and create relationships with industry partners to move freight across the country as needed. Also responsible for day to day operations to ensure on-time freight delivery. Utilizing IT experience to setup various solutions for integration and communication.

Mar 2017 - May 2019

Database Administrator

Sacramento, California, Us

Main responsibilities were as DBA for SQL Server for the engine, reports, analysis, and integration services. Established new standards in server configuration to enable better security, performance, and management for the SQL Server and Oracle database servers. These new standards also included the use of database schema source control for SQL Server using SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) and Team Foundation Server (TFS). Used the new standards to help plan and perform the upgrade to SQL Server 2016 and also reconfigure existing servers to utilize new standards, which included creating new service accounts, ensuring Service Principal Names (SPNs) were setup properly, servers were able to send alerts as needed, server memory settings were configured correctly, and servers utilized best practices for security. For TFS, implemented use of more features other than source control such as work item tracking, proper code promotion, and ensuring TFS was updated; this included the plan to upgrade TFS to latest version. For SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), implemented new standard on how SSIS packages should get created with the use of the new features using project deployment model. Lastly, used new SSIS standards to implement replacement SSIS process for legacy ETL process for database larger than 10TB. Also helped establish Active Directory group policies to enable SQL Server to work properly since some settings were blocked or limited. Other daily tasks included index maintenance, administration for AlwaysOn Availability Groups, general troubleshooting, peer mentoring, end user training, and query tuning.

Aug 2015 - Jan 2017

Database Administrator

Denver, Colorado, Us

My main responsibilities were maintenance and tuning of SQL Servers, consisting of SQL Server 2008 or 2008 R2, and upgrading or migrating them to SQL Server 2014. Secondary duties included using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) to move data between servers and to display data, respectively, and also upgrading these to the SQL Server 2014 version. Other tasks included database design, stored procedure development, and troubleshooting. Converted some manual repetitive tasks to automated SSIS processes and set up recurring maintenance tasks also. Three major issues resolved were reconfiguring SQL Server to minimize data contention, which drastically reduced the amount of deadlocks compared to the count when first starting, setting proper limits on server RAM, and lowering the CPU load. Helped implement better security by transitioning to Active Directory service accounts instead of SQL users to eliminate passwords in connection strings while also setting SPNs for accounts that needed them so Kerberos authentication could be used instead of NTLM. One instance utilized a two-node failover cluster, which helped minimize downtime during patching. As the only DBA on staff, I helped with some database questions regarding proper sizing, data types, and best practices. Some of these tasks included proof of concepts with SQL Server 2014 Availability Groups, PostgreSQL replication and high availablity, general server-level analysis and/or troubleshooting.

Oct 2013 - Aug 2015

Systems Software Specialist Ii (Technical)

Elk Grove, California, Us

As the lead DBA, in addition to helping my team members with solving some of their questions with SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), SQL Server (SQL), SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), and SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS), I came up with the plan to upgrade many of the SQL 2005 servers to SQL 2008 and/or SQL 2008 R2 and subsequently to SQL 2012. I also led the installation of Service Packs for all SQL versions. I directed my team on creating and implementing SQL security directives, maintenance plans, different configurations in SSIS, and utilizing source control for using SSRS. To move data between servers, I setup various methods such as using SSIS, replication, or log shipping. As the lead, I was responsible for ensuring any mirroring or clustered databases were working properly and resolving any issues that occurred, especially for performance issues. Upon release of SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT), I implemented it into our toolset to help source control the databases. I have utilized SQL Server Profiler and the Activity Monitor to help find some bottlenecks. As part of a team, I have consulted with developers to optimize database designs and set proper indexes on databases to return data faster with proper tuning. I have also set different isolation settings to help with concurrent read/write locking issues. On some of the bigger databases, I setup table partitions to help with performance. Lastly, I maintained and set security settings and data sources for SSRS deployments.
