Dr Anton Best is a physician and public health practitioner who until recently, was the Deputy Chief Medical Officer in Barbados. Prior to this he was the Senior Medical Officer of Health with responsibility for the HIV/ STI Programme; a role he had from 2007 until January 2021.He received his medical degree from the University of the West Indies in 1999. He received his Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana in 2005. And he received a Master of Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University in 2011.Since graduation from medical school and completion of internship, he has worked at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and then as a private general practitioner, as a Medical Officer at the Barbados Prison Service and at various polyclinics across Barbados.He was the Senior Medical Officer of Health responsible for the HIV/ STI Programme of the Ministry of Health and Wellness for fourteen (14) years. In this role, he was the foremost advisor on policy, programmatic and clinical matters related to the prevention and control of HIV, STIs, Viral hepatitis and related diseases in Barbados. As the SMOH, he was also pivotal in strengthening the national public health laboratory network. He oversaw the amalgamation of the public health laboratories; an ambitious undertaking which was supported by the US Centers for Disease control and Prevention (CDC) and Caribbean Med Labs Foundation (CMLF). He supervised the development of national laboratory strategic plans and a national laboratory policy.He has managed or co-managed various health-sector projects with the World Bank, the United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Global Fund.Dr Best was the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship by the Rotary Club of Barbados in July 2020 for his role during COVID-19. He also received a national Gold Award of Achievement in November 2021.in his role of the DCMO he supported the Office of the CMO in its leadership and oversight roles for all Essential Public Health Functions for Barbados.Dr. Best has taken up a new temporary assignment with PAHO as an Advisor, Health Systems and Services. He is based in Dominica. His role will include advising the Minister of Health of Dominica on the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Health System Transformation Initiative and the re-organization of the Ministry of Health to effectively support the Health System Transformation process.
