I started in 1987 at LIPS (Wartsila), working on a conventional lathe and milling machine. After my military draft I returned to LIPS and soon was asked to work in the toolshop. Here I worked with all modern tools and presetters. I also learned a lot about other related issues of manufacturing. Like measuring, quality and purchasing...I started my evening time study for MBO and after the first year I was asked to step into the manufacturing engineer position in the machine shop, There I really felt at home. And I really grew there. I started with the old drawing board but grew to a key-user in the CAD-CAM software. Eventually I was designing all fixtures and tooling for the Drunen machine shop. I also started programming and did a lot of automation of all tools in our department. I wrote Post-processors for NX-CAM and designed software tools. During my manufacturing engineer years I got more involved with projects outside the department and even international. This came to a climax in the years 2004-2006 where I have been doing a lot of work in a small team to set up a complete machine shop in China. I was involved from the first shovel in the ground to the inauguration, setting up machines and processes. Providing software tools and complete tooling packages, Programming the machines in NX-CAM and creating all necessary documents to support them. This was a great time and experience.A few years later I made the step to the R&D department developing tools and processes for Wärtsilä’s global use in manufacturing environments.
