    Worked on a NASA project that sought to increase the autonomy of spacecraft in deep space missions. The aim was to radically reduce the computational footprint of reconstruction of asteroid shapes from visual data. Such a reduction is needed to make shape reconstruction doable with just the resources available on board of a small spacecraft, without sending any data back to Earth for processing. I used Markov Brains, a type of evolvable logical circuits, as the primary computational substrate.In certain cases it is hard to design a smooth fitness function for the shape reconstruction task. I made an algorithm that learns such fitness functions from non-smooth functions that are easy to design.I investigated how information propagates through layers of Boolean circuits and uncovered a bias-variance trade-off that places heavy constraints on how shape reconstruction and other regression tasks should be handled by digital circuitry.In addition I looked at applying conventional neural models to the shape reconstruction task. I proposed an architecture that enables incremental improvement of the shape representation it stores internally. It features a convenient separation of the training processes for learning the prior distribution of shapes and the mapping that extracts partial shape information from visuals.

    I made evolutionary (search) algorithms that attempt to reduce difficulty of a problem as they go about solving it.The first algorithm tweaks the way sensors are placed on the body of the robot while trying to find a controller that makes the robot solve its task. It ended up finding a configuration that does the job with a very simple controller.The second algorithm searches for a controller for a fleet of small, tethered robots tasked with assembling structures in zero gravity. It is very difficult to solve this task if the sole objective is to bring the parts together and orient them properly. To help the search, I came up multiple behaviours that could be useful in the assembly process. An algorithm that looked for an optimal combination of behaviours to encourage outperformed an algorithm that used a fixed, hand designed combination.I also looked into how to make neural controllers modular; how to use human-supplied hints in a search-based automatic designer when it gets stuck; and how to interface a physical simulation library with Python in a roboticist-friendly way.
