The LRL-CAT beamline focuses on high throughput macromolecular X-ray crystallography. I manage data collection and data processing, in addition to serving as the main contact for external users, both from academia and industry. In a typical year, nearly 10,000 crystals are received and analyzed at the beamline. I assist with the extensive and intricate maintenance of the beamline, as well as major software and hardware upgrades to keep LRL-CAT at the forefront of modern beamline technology. Upgrades have included a Pilatus 6M detector from Dectris, a Kohzu double crystal monochromator, an ISARA sample changer robot from Irelec, and a complete network overhaul, among countless smaller projects. I am also highly involved with external collaborations, especially remote collection at offsite beamlines.

Optics specialist – worked with 935 nm, 399 nm, and 369 nm laser systems, each being sent to the ion trap with a specific use in the 171Yb+ energy levels. Also planned and built the optical systems for these lasers, such as communicating with vendors to order parts, planning beam paths, profiling beams with a Guppy camera, mounting optical components, beam alignments, beam shaping and polarization, and optical fibering. To a lesser degree also worked on designing and building the vacuum chamber, the laser cavity and its associated software, and with operating the acousto-optic and electro-optic modulators.
