About Antonio T. Baines

Hi, I’m Antonio T. Baines, PhD, a cancer pharmacologist teaching the next generation of STEM professionals as Associate Professor of Biological & Biomedical Sciences at North Carolina Central University (NCCU). I also teach at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) School of Medicine. I’m a member of the Curriculum in Toxicology and Environmental Medicine at UNC-CH.I’m the primary pancreatic cancer researcher at NCCU, a Historically Black University. My lab works to develop new drugs that better treat pancreatic cancer, especially in the area of drug resistance. After studying the oncoprotein K-Ras for years, my current research is focused on the oncoprotein target PIM kinases. I care deeply about the diversity of clinical trials for drug treatments for pancreatic cancer. I co-founded the Racial Health Disparities in Pancreatic Cancer Consortium.Cancer researchers, I’m committed to our shared mission of saving lives. I’m always open to collaborations.I’m honored to serve as an advisor to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and scientific organizations:-Working Group for Advisory Committee for NIH Director-Scientific Advisory Committee on Alternative Toxicological Methods (SACATM) appointed by the Director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)-Springer Nature US Research Advisory Council-Science Education and Career Advancement Committee for the American Association for Cancer ResearchI’m a passionate advocate for my students and mentees, helping them explore Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) career paths toward the success they want for themselves. I’m proud of my Teaching Award for Excellence from North Carolina Central University.I received my Bachelor of Science in Biology from Norfolk State University, a Historically Black University on a full STEM honors scholarship. I have a PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology from the University of Arizona where I researched chemoprevention and treatments against colon cancer. I was a Seeding Postdoctoral Innovators in Research & Education (SPIRE) fellow at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.     Antonio T. Baines, PhD is a cancer pharmacologist who teaches the next generation of STEM professionals. He’s an Associate Professor at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) in the department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences in the College of Health and Sciences (CHAS). He holds a joint appointment in the Julius L. Chambers - Biomedical/Biotechnology Research Institute (JLC-BBRI) in their Cancer Research Program.He is proud to support the students and faculty of North Carolina Central University to thrive.
