Verona Area, Italy

Ph.D. abstract: “The Ph.D. aims at exploring a new research path in the signal processing, especially using the scale domain representation. The scale transform, the scale domain and all the related concepts will be analyzed and studied. Application and implementation of the scale transform will be investigated and various ideas of possible works will be suggested. In particular feature extraction using the scale, vowel recognition using scale, human perception from a scale point of view digital audio effects in scale domain will be studied”.The Ph.D. has been terminated and the defence has been successfully held in April, 2008 with an international commission of reviewers. The research area of the Ph.D activities was the signal and audio analysis and the main objective the exploration and the study of the scale and Mellin domains. A very important part of this work was the developing of a fast algorithm (a Matlab toolbox). This was the first algorithm able to compute the whole family of Beta-Mellin transforms with a sub-quadratic asymptotic complexity. At the same time other activities has been performed: coordination, design and development, setup and maintenance of the web infrastructure requested for the European Project (3 years long) S2S^2. The main server was a UML Debian (Linux) based pc located in UK. The most important components were: LAMP, Postfix, PostgreSQL, CVS, GForge, Mailman, phpMyAdmin, phpPGAdmin, Mambo CMS. Other components providing security and backup services were: IPTables, SNORT, ACID, automatic backup based on server scripts for synchronization via SSH with RSync on other servers. Further services and improvements have been achieved by modifying the code of some system’s components (i.e. CMS Mambo, GForge (PHP written) and Mailman (Python) to meet the requirements of the European partners.
