Anton van Elteren is a Senior Environmental & Social Officer with FMO since 2001. Implementing FMO’s sustainability policies (based on IFC Performance Standards) both internally and with clients worldwide are an important part of his work. Currently supporting FMO's Energy customers with a focus on Latin America, he has provided sustainability guidance and training to numerous FMO clients all over the world, including financial institutions. Waste management / recycling is one of his dedicated focus sectors. Summarizing, Anton’s experience into sustainable finance reaches from microfinance to large infrastructure development. He is fully conversant with IFC Performance Standards, World Bank EHS Guidelines and Equator Principles. During 2014-2015 he was the (Co-)Chair of FMO's internal Climate Business knowledge transfer focus group. Recently he was a member of the Advisory Board of the NWO funded, TU Delft led Sustainable Ports in Africa research project. Being a biologist by origin, prior to working for FMO he has worked for over 16 years as an environmental consultant, with assignments all over the world. Well-cherished memories are kept from longer-term working relationships with sustainability professionals on projects in NW Ethiopia, the North-Western Frontier Province in Pakistan, the Peruvian rainforest and Siberia (yes, North of the Arctic!) to name a few.Specialties: Fields of expertise include environmental information systems, waste management, soil pollution and, as 'core business', environmental impact assessment. In 2007, Anton has also been a key originator of the innovative FMO guidance for a dedicated environmental and social risk management approach for microfinance and SMEs (see free toolkit download at FMO website).He also contributed to the refinement of FMO's internal sustainability management system, covering both portfolio risk and opportunities and our own office facility management.
