Since falling for underground mining at the Helsinki University of Technology (HUT) in the late 1990s, I have made it my goal to get to know and learn as much about underground mining as possible. After my graduation in 2002 I continued working as a Researcher in the HUT. My work included planning, scheduling, budgeting and managing mine ventilation projects for underground metal and nonmetal mines in Finland. As a Research Engineer at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) within CDC/NIOSH since October 2007 and as a Project Investigator since February 2008, I have expanded my knowledge on coal mine ventilation and coal mining related health and safety hazards. The research has been performed at the NIOSH/OMSHR Ventilation Gallery, the Bruceton Experimental Mine, and operational underground coal and trona mines. From August 2013 I have worked at the Kemi Mine in various positions, further increasing my knowledge about project planning and management as well as advanced mine ventilation planning. I have about 20 years of experience in mine ventilation and underground health & safety. • Knowledge on underground ventilation and safety systems of metal mines, industrial minerals (nonmetal) mines, coal mines, underground spaces, and tunnels. • Extensive experience in project management. • Expertise in mine ventilation modeling, including Ventsim, VentGraph, and VnetPC. • Experience in subcontracting, consulting and stakeholder relations. • First author of several peer-reviewed publications. • Active member of professional societies.Specialties: Project management, mine ventilation, underground health and safety.
