About Anushka Shirali

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to far, go together! - African proverbThe year was 1999 and I was in India where one Sunday, the announcement was made at our local church that Rs. 100,000 was needed for improvements at a local Special Needs organization. While the request was relying on individual donations, my mind immediately went to ways in which I could organize a fun event that would raise the money much faster but more importantly introduce a lot more people in the community to the ongoing needs of this organization – not just a one-time donation! The year was 2006 and I was part of an organization in India at the time working to digitize the membership forms for the city marathon so that we could process the information around who was running to support non-profit organizations in the marathon. This faster processing time would lead to the money reaching those who need it the most much quicker. The year was 2018 and as part of a federally funded Technical Assistance Center, I led the implementation activities to support a large state agency to roll out their Computer Science standards in 18 months. This role required the ability to think fast, ensure multiple voices were heard, their feedback incorporated into the various drafts of the document as well as making sure the project team was ready to navigate any challenge that came up with a resilient attitude to ensure we saw the project towards successful completion. The year was 2020 and the world just saw a global pandemic. My husband as a doctor was on the frontlines but education was also seeing a change it had never seen before – an almost sharp turn for so many districts to pivot to asynchronous learning, teams that worked entirely in person to now learn new ways of working online so I found myself once again leveraging strengths of empathy, knowledge of operational efficiency and technology to navigate both my personal and professional experiences. It is now 2023 and having worked on projects totaling over a $100 million, I have especially gained a lot of experience with the internal operational setup of large federal grant programs involving a wide network of partners, clients and funders supporting state and local agencies in education. I have always found ways to leverage technology to ensure efficiencies in the definition and implementation of processes. My outlook to my work still remains the same across the decades, if you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to far, go together!
