Helsinki Area, Finland

Project researcher at the inorganic chemistry laboratory division. I worked on veryfying the country of origin of strawberries sold on market as Finnish products. The aim of this pilot study was to develop analytical methods to fight food fraud.Main duties:- Elemental analysis by ICP-MS and ICP-OES- Method development and validation- Analysing samples (practical laboratory work including sample pretreatment, microwave digestion, dilution, standard preparation, operating laboratory equipment etc.)- Solving analytical problems, maintaining equipment in running condition, troubleshooting in error situations- Checking and approving analytical results and quality control data (LIMS)- Data processing using R-programming and multivariate statistics (PCA, LDA etc.) (learning independently how to code R in order to process chemistry data)- Reporting results- Updating guidelines concerning analytical methods- Learning about stable isotope ratio analysis (SIRA) and future possibilities in food authenticity research- Participating in the installation of new IRMS (isotope ratio mass spectrometry) equipment. Laboratory Technician

Helsinki Area, Finland

Working as a maternity leave substitute laboratory technician at chemistry departments sample pretreatment laboratory.Main duties:- Recording samples to Eviras Laboratory Information Management System ELMO (LIMS)- Checking sample and documentation compliance with sampling guidelines- Sample preptreatment and distributing ready samples to different laboratory sections to be further processed- Sending out sampling materials- Participating in laboratory LEAN-project (5S) that focused on streamlining the sample arrival and pretreatment process in the laboratory. This work required good organizing skills, ability to collaborate with other laboratory staff and the ability to prioritize and schedule work. This task involved daily co-operating with laboratory technicians, chemists, customers and control officers. Keeping up with the whole chemistry sections incoming sample flow and the sampling material packages to be sent out required systematic working approach as well as the flexibility to adjust plans in case of more urgent jobs at hand. Majority of the samples were animal products (milk, meat, liver, kidney, fish, eggs) related to food control, inspection, monitoring or surveillance programs and preset food control plans (for example contaminant residue monitoring progam). There was also a wide range of different types of project samples and commercial chemistry laboratory samples going through this laboratory.

Laboratory Engineer

Helsinki Area, Finland

Working as a substitute laboratory engineer at animal pathology laboratory.Main duties:- Histology laboratory work (tissue sample preparation and staining to be viewed under a microscope) - Microbiological parasite detection (Cryptosporidium ja Giardia microscopy)- Safe handling of different solvents, reagents and chemicals- Tissue paraffing block making and trimming with a microtome- Operating laboratory equipment (tissue processor, slide printer, centrifuge, staining robot etc.).For me this job required the ability to quickly familiarize myself with completely new branch of laboratory work, as I had no previous experience in histopathology. I found this brief temporary post very interesting as I have always had personal interest in pets and other animals. I found helping to solve the puzzle of why an animal died highly meaningful. Key factors to thrive in this position were listening, asking questions and having an internal motivation towards animal welfare. I got to utilise what I had previously learned during my food science studies about microbiology, cell biology and anatomy in this job. After this job I can also confidently state that i have no fear of guts or internal organs...
