During my final placement I felt I was able to bring all the transferable skills I had learnt throughout the year together and consolidate my learning. On this placement I had increased exposure to children with complex neurological and MSK issues. Having previous experience with neurological and MSK patients this allowed to me focus on working with children. I was able to perform subjective and objective assessment and with support of my educator tailor these assessment skills to young children and adapt when required. I was able to use my previously learnt manual handling skills and alter those to small children with developmental delays and larger older children with complex physical needs. Additionally with support I was able to participate and at times leads hydrotherapy and other play-based activity sessions multiple times a week. I was able to build on my adaptive communication skills and tailor these to children with varying communication methods such as Makaton or non-verbal. I was involved in clinical discussions around the holistic management of children once they leave the paediatric service and transition to adulthood as well as collaborative discussions with parents or guardians.

This placement being outside of the NHS and in a professional sport scenario was daunting however the transferable skills I had been developing allowed me to adapt quickly. I was able to further my assessment skills in high pressure environments and with support from my educator clinically reason through treatments and rehabilitation planning. Additionally, I was able to increase exposure to specialist equipment such as force plates, groin bars and handheld dynamometers which were all used in assessment of player injuries such as grade 2c hamstring tears or an adductor avulsion. I was able to further hone my soft tissues techniques, regularly performing sports massage, MET’s, assisted stretching and more. Similarly, to working with MDT’s in and NHS environment I was able to develop professional working relationships with sports therapist, strength and conditioning coaches and sports scientist to achieve desired outcomes with specific players. I also improved on my ability design rehabilitation programme for injuries including ankle sprains and pars fractures.
National Hospital For Neurology And Neurosurgery
During this placement I was able to build on what I had learnt on my previous two placements. I had increased manual handling exposure with patients with complex neurological needs such as MND. I was able to learn neurology specific assessment techniques and with support from my clinical educator clinically reason long term management. Additionally, I was able to work closely with occupational therapists and perform joint session such as kitchen or shower assessments. I was able to design basic rehabilitation programmes aimed at maintaining functions for conditions like Multiple Sclerosis or Parkinsons. With support I was able to manage a small caseload of patients and developed prioritisation skills to optimally plan my workload.
Ealing Hospital
I was able to take the skills gained in my first placement and transfer and modify these to the acute respiratory ward. Under supervision of my clinical educator, I was able to learn respiratory specific subjective and objective assessments including: auscultation, evaluating coughs and sputum, interpreting vital signs and observations, reviewing chest x-rays and oxygen requirements and more. I was able to assess these on various pathologies including pleural effusions, lung cancers, interstitial lung disease, COPD and asthma. I undertook respiratory specific treatments such as suctioning, manual techniques, teaching air way clearance techniques like bubble PEP or ACBT. Additionally, I was able to improve my manual handling techniques and became increasingly confident with hoists, Sara stedys, sliding sheets and rolling transfers with patients of varying sizes. In this placement I was able to create relationships with other members of the MDT and develop a deeper understanding of their roles and how we could work together for the benefit of the patients and families. Similarly on this placement, It continued to build on other transferable skills such as managing caseloads, discharge planning and respiratory specific documentation

Within this placement under the guidance and supervision of the clinical educator I completed subjective and objective assessments for a variety of lower specific condition across a variety of ages and presentations including: Post ACL reconstruction, both knee and hip replacements, Achilles tendinopathies, gluteal tendinopathies and more. With supervision I led weekly classes for knee/hip replacement patients as well as hydrotherapy-based sessions. Additionally, I was able to work toward an independent caseload of patients and documenting these sessions in a timely manner. I developed my ability to create, deliver and explain rehabilitation programmes to patients and collaboratively work towards co-produced patient centred goals. I also presented a case study education and training session around a patient with complex needs and was involved in conversations with the team on service improvement.
