Ficksburg, Free State, South Africa

Ficksburg High School is Model C (government run) school in the Eastern Free State which also allows students to complete trades courses (N1, N2, N3). I taught both Grade 8 and 9 (standard 6, 7) students English First Language, English Second Language, and Social Sciences (combination of history and basic mapwork). Class sizes ranged from 17 to 37 students each, with the average closer to 30, and about 75% of students spoke English as a second language (half of which are Afrikaans, half SeSotho). Responsibilities included scheduling of SS work across available classes for the year, arranging and scheduling curriculum for English Second Language for the year, as well as the same for First Language, whilst evaluating learners' skill levels. Tests, exams, evaluation methods, record keeping methods and exercises were also each teacher's responsibility.

Teaching in the Humanities Faculty to first year Afrikaans students. The course was on the novel "Toorberg" by E. Van Heerden (translated into English as "Ancestral Voices", and into several other languages).The course focused on renewal in the Afrikaans pastoral novel, as well as on Magical Realism; responsibilities included developing course materials, marking assignments, setting and marking term examinations.

As a newsreader my responsibilities include the collection and writing of news for radio, as well as reading and discussing news on air. As Talk show host, the nature of the show (a current affairs discussion) requires extensive preparation each week, an analysis of raw material and a certain extent of interpretation. I am also required to set the tone for the discussion, mediate between panel members and engage with listeners. On the technical side, hosting requires consideration of time, sound output, and station policy on music and advertising output, as well as good knowledge of the equipment (both hardware and software) required for live on-air broadcasting.

As advertising manager I was responsible for the conceptualization and placement of adverts, as well as for developing contracts and setting up and designing a schedule and brochure. It was also required of me to build and maintain relationships with clients, and to ensure that their needs are met, as well as to ensure that the paper's finances were sufficiently supplied from the advertising sector. This involved determining per-page costs and adjusting advert costs accordingly.As part of the executive team of the paper I was also responsible in part for executive decisions and the general management of the paper.
