Creating a new citizen science platform to involve staff and patients in healthcare research in the NHS

I was responsible for the architecture and technical roadmap for Cancer Research UK's online estate. This included rolling out an API-centric microservices approach across all systems, together with moving towards continuous delivery and containerisation.

Citizen science engaged the support of the public worldwide to analyse cancer research data and release data bottlenecks which help accelerate research. I was responsible for providing strategic leadership on all technical aspects of CRUK's innovative and award winning Citizen Science programme. Coached a multi-disciplinary team in agile and lean startup methods to achieve increased scientific accuracy and to deliver more scientifically validated experiments in six months than in the two previous years

As head of product development I developed the product roadmap and planned product release taking into account input from different stakeholders and balancing the need to deliver new features with longer term technical platform developments. I coordinated development teams across three countries: UK, Malaysia and China. A key focus was improving development processes within the organisation, embracing agile methods (scrum) and continuous improvement.

Garmentology was an internet start-up providing advanced personalisation services for online clothing retailers. I was responsible for translating the proof-of-concept systems into production quality software that was ready for real world deployment. As part of the management team I was also involved with marketing, PR and developing company strategy.

Principal business analyst on a major project to redevelop McLagan's core compensation analysis tool. I was responsible for understanding the company’s business processes and translating these into a vision for the IT team to implement.

ISA (a Microsoft Gold Partner) focussed on development of bespoke business software using Microsoft technologies. Latterly the company focussed on two areas – CRM-based systems and mobile systems. Key projects included • For NSF-CMi, a major project to computerise a paper-based data gathering system and integrate this with a replacement for a number of disparate back-end databases. I undertook major analysis of data and workflows within the organisation to understand and redesign business processes prior to system design. I was responsible for the system architecture, the specification of functionality • I was account manager for one of ISA’s key clients: Ladbrokes Racing Ltd. For five years I led a team of six developing a betting shop automation system. • I carried out several projects for J Sainsbury: I was team leader on a project of twelve people, developing an application that allowed central buyers to evaluate purchase decisions for the entire Sainsbury group
