Usc Mobile & Environmental Media Lab + Steelcase Research
Greater Los Angeles Area
Clients: Steelcase Research- A design fiction research project exploring the human-computer interaction in an "office of the future".- Tasked with prototyping spatial and interactive audio design techniques to facilitate intuitive ambient communication and interaction between humans, smart objects and an intelligent, interactive environment.- Prototypes in Unity made use of camera based sensors such as Microsoft Kinect, mobile and wearable technology to detect and connect inhabitants with their environment.- A comprehensive audio design library was compiled to simulate various sonic environments representing and inducing particular states of awareness, such as productivity, creative brainstorming, relaxation and mindfulness, to name a few.- These soundscapes were assembled in Ableton Live to output audio to a bespoke 8.1 channel spatial audio system and up to 4 'roaming' bluetooth speakers within the prototype office space simultaneously.- A live demonstration of the various design and interactive prototypes coming together as a cohesive narrative driven experience was performed and demonstrated to the clients in an experiential workshop.
