Amy led the Provincial Eating Disorders Awareness (PEDAW) campaign, which is a year-long effort to increase awareness of eating disorders and improve body image. Through PEDAW, she provided leadership to a wide collective effort of volunteers and eating disorder professionals committed to raising awareness around the prevention, early intervention and treatment of eating disorders and gaining positive body image. Thanks to her passionate leadership, PEDAW has become a well-established movement with strong support and engagement from all across BC. Amy also managed the “Love Our Bodies, Love Ourselves” (LOBLO) social media presence, including their Twitter feed, Instagram, Facebook page, blog, and YouTube channel. Love Our Bodies, Love Ourselves is a PEDAW initiative which seeks to promote positive body image year-round through positive affirmations and healthy messaging. Amy regularly appeared on radio shows, news channels and other local media outlets to discuss the movement that is happening in BC to prevent eating disorders, disordered eating and negative body image.

Amy was a member of the Jessie’s Legacy Speakers’ Bureau, where she visited schools and other venues to educate young people and professionals about eating disorders and body image. Amy routinely presented at public events and visited schools where she discussed eating disorders, its impact on my health, life, and relationships, as a way to educate children and youth across BC about the prevention of eating disorders and body image. In addition, Amy am always seeking new, relevant groups and venues to educate the public about eating disorders. She sought out personal trainers at gyms across the Lower Mainland to educate them about overexercise and eating disorders.

She mentored and trained new volunteer facilitators for the groups, which includes reviewing transcripts with the facilitators, debriefing with facilitators after chat sessions, informing about new resources, and often facilitated groups herself. These online support groups would not be possible without her dedication, and they are so important because they offer those with eating disorders a confidential, anonymous, easily accessible method of support that engages in pro-recovery language.
