The Associated Programme on Flood Management (APFM) and Integrated Drought Management Programme (IDMP) are joint initiatives of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Global Water Partnership (GWP).Whether due to natural climate variability or climate change, the likelihood of extreme weather conditions is increasing. The impacts include more frequent and severe floods and droughts, which affect the lives of millions of people and cause great economic losses. Building resilience to these events and helping countries to become more water secure requires an integrated approach to water resources management.Integrated Flood Management merges land use, water resource and risk management in a river basin, with a view to maximizing the benefits from using floodplains and minimizing theloss of life and property from floods. Integrated Drought Management mitigates drought risk and builds drought resilience by addressing multiple components of drought management, including disaster risk reduction, climate adaptation strategies and national water policies.
