Worked as a member of the Defence team for Ratko Mladic, former General of the Serbian military during the war in the Balkans. Duties included drafting legal submissions, evidence analysis, witness preparation and supervision of intern cohort. I also gave lectures to visiting professionals about our work. Assisted as part of the team in the drafting and compilation of the Final Defence Trial Brief which was submitted to the Trial Chamber at the close of the case.

Phnom Penh

I represented 380 civil party clients in Case 004. The case was in the pre-trial phase therefore my role involved interviewing and recording information of potential civil parties to determine their eligibility for inclusion in the trial. I monitored and summarised filings for the case in order to brief senior legal counsel on each issue relevant to our clients. I also assisted senior counsel to draft a pre-eminent submission on behalf of our clients to consider forced pregnancy a crime against humanity. I participated in crime site analysis.

As a full time intern in the Trial Chamber, my responsibilities included drafting legal memoranda, trial reporting, assisting to draft decisions, assessing and summarising witness or expert evidence and undertaking research in international criminal law and human rights law.

While on full time placement with Justice Connect I was based in their not-for-profit law division and provided legal assistance to a wide variety of registered charities in Victoria. This included client interviewing, legal research, providing referrals, briefing senior legal counsel and giving legal training to not-for profit organisations in Victoria. We gave written advice on legal governance, contracts, privacy, tax reporting, work health and safety and risk management.

I was placed at the Magistrates Court Legal Advice Service where I became familiar with the Magistrates Court Act, Rules of Court and practices and procedures. I developed skills in legal research, drafting documents and critical analysis with a particular focus on client interviewing and observing court procedures. As part of the placement I also completed a research project, which aimed to promote and protect access to justice for disadvantaged people in Adelaide.
