The Bridge Project aims to lower the recidivism rate of juvenile offenders through placing young people in a structured program involving work readiness training, work placement, as well as ongoing coaching and mentoring.In my role as board member I was actively involved in the strategic planning process, applying for grants and sponsorship, seeking employment opportunities for young people and event planning for our annual fundraising breakfast. By connecting young people with willing employers the program sees young people exit the juvenile justice without re-offence. In 2009 I led the founding project team of the YMCA ReBuild Social Enterprise. ReBuild is a not for profit social enterprise and facilities maintenance service organisation, which provides young people transitioning from custodial sentences with a short-term work placement and training program.The program aims to provide young people with the training and employment skills required to find sustainable employment whilst re-joining society. Justin Madden, Minister for Planning and the Victorian Government’s Respect Agenda spoke of the value of the project in empowering young people to be all they can be.He said the project helped to “foster a sense of worth for young people to feel more comfortable in the world around them”.“Young people need opportunities to do things for themselves, they’re screaming out to be of value” Mick Malthouse, Coach Collingwood Football ClubAs Project Lead I was responsible for oversight and team management, business plan development, the successful submission for grant funding from the Westpac Trust, resourcing the business, establishing foundation processes/procedures and ensuring compliance with work-place regulations.ReBuild transitioned from concept and business plan, to operationally active, within six months and achieved its goal of being fully self-sustainable after one year of operation.
