Providing direct support to APL in maintaining, managing, and Captaining APL's fleet. Responsible for the safety and well-being of everyone on board, ship operations, navigation, communication, and the safe use of vessel equipment on board. Working with the chief scientist or principal engineer, we will be planning, coordinating, and conducting all aspects of research cruises which involve the deployment, testing, and the recovery of scientific equipment (e.g., moorings, buoys, AUVs, and tow bodies).

Antarctica

-Serve as the primary contact on the ship interfacing with ASC management, NSF stakeholders and foreign governments regarding science project personnel and logistics.-Responsible for all aspects of the ASC functions on board the ASC-contracted research vessels.-Monitors the subcontract (charter agreement) for the research vessel on behalf of ASC.-Oversees proper use and maintenance of NSF equipment on the ship.-Coordinates, manages and directs all aspects of the shipboard program, including safety orientation for all new personnel.-Without direct oversight develops onsite contingency planning to ensure ship adheres to program schedules and other issues that arise at sea and during port calls often working with foreign country representatives and dignitaries.-Works directly with the Ship’s Master and Chief Scientist to plan and execute the science plan overseeing the activities of approximately 25 scientists.-Provides hands-on leadership and directs the 24-hour operations of approximately 10 ASC staff members (primarily subcontractors) aboard the vessel to meet science objectives safely.-Directly responsible for tracking and documenting a variety of cruise data including crew lists, custom documents, training rosters, procurement's, Antarctic environmental occurrences, subcontractor performance and pay, accident reporting, and shipping manifests with supporting logistics documents for movement of science samples and equipment internationally.

-International service based teen adventure program. Fostered leadership, independence, and self-confidence in groups of teenagers aged 13-18. -Captured, tagged, and released sea turtles to provide data for endemic turtle growth, habitats, and populations through the Conservation and Fisheries Department-Taught lectures on plastics, conservation, sea turtles, mangroves, lionfish and Fish ID-Responsible for sailing, safety and all boat duties aboard 50ft sailing vessels-Led community service initiatives with Jost van Dyke Preservation Society, Virgin Island Search and Rescue, Robinson O'neal Memorial Primary School, Reef Guardians, Green and Clean VI, National Parks Trust, Valley Day School

British Virgin Islands

Greater Seattle Area

Three month contracts aboard commercial fishing vessels in the Bering sea and the North Pacific. Collects, maintains, and distributes data for scientific, management, and regulation compliance purposes for National Marine Fisheries. Record fishing effort, location, and catch information. Sample to determine species composition. Take biological samples for age, growth and reproduction through otolith extraction, tissue samples, stomach samples, whole fish, scales, snouts and marine mammal samples.

-Conduct directed field research and monitoring of commercial and recreational fisheries from state and federal waters by collecting detailed biostatical data.-Interview recreational anglers to gather data on catch rates, effort, gear and area fished at marinas, docks, piers, bridges, boat ramps and beach banks-Sample fish to collect accurate length and weight measurements and biological samples for age, growth and reproduction through otolith extraction and Blackfin Tuna tissue samples-Process field and laboratory samples following standardized protocols and review data for quality assurance-Proficient fish morphology and identification of marine fish and invertebrates; sampling methods and data collection and using dichotomous keys
