After relocating to Brisbane and transferring off Prodimage, I rejoined the Security team in a Security Engineering role. I worked on Sarbanes-Oxley compliance related work, remediating issues found in the Prodimage from the 2013 first-half audit. I also worked on automating some of the auditing infrastructure for future audits.I devised a system bulk collection of host information for all of the hosts in our Production environment, for SoX auditing purposes.I did some work around hardening Corporate OpenSSH server configuration.

I joined the team responsible for the maintenance of the OS image that runs on all of Google's production servers (Prodimage). This was at the tail end of the time it was being transitioned (in place) from being based on Red Hat Linux 7.1 to something based off of Debian. This was much more of a software engineering role.I was responsible for assisting with package maintenance for the packages that the base image comprised of, as well as automation development. I developed new image building automation (in Python), as well as other verification automation in a mix of Bash and Python. I contributed to regular releases of the image.I performed an analysis of the usage of the root filesystem, which facilitated subsequently being able to grow it in place, with no disruption to Production services.I did some foundation work on porting to PowerPC64.

I was invited to join a new Systems Administration team within the Security team, for maintaining security-sensitive services. I took over management of Google's Network IDS infrastructure, which was present in every Google office. I upgraded the (Goobuntu) operating system on all of them from an OS derived from Ubuntu 6.06 to Ubuntu 10.04, also re-implementing the configuration management using Puppet instead of CFengine. I also handled a roll out of a new version of Snort to the entire fleet of IDS servers.There was also a strong interest in being able to perform packet inspection on 10Gbps links, which was technically challenging. I conducted vendor evaluations and also in-house R&D to find an appropriate solution.During my time on this team, I was promoted for my work.

In Q2 of 2007, I was asked to act as the tech lead for Goobuntu (Workstation), while the current tech lead was on paternity leave. Goobuntu was the Google-customised Ubuntu Linux distribution used on all Engineering desktops and some Corporate Servers. From Q3 onwards, I remained in this role in a permanent capacity until the end of 2009.During my time leading Goobuntu, I unified the three geographically disparate teams that were working on the Desktop, Server and Laptop variants (in three different timezones) so we could better leverage synergies and minimise duplication of effort. At around the same time, I drove a consensus to switch from CFEngine to Puppet for configuration management. This led to some greater alignment of configuration management across Linux and Mac platforms at Google.I led the development of custom releases of, migration to, and ongoing maintenance of Ubuntu LTS releases based on 8.04 and 10.04.When the organisation reorganised itself around Focus Areas, I led the entire Corp Unix Platforms Focus Area (encompassing our Mac OS team as well). This allowed us to have some level of consistency across Unix-like platforms at Google.Because of my depth of knowledge of Corporate Linux platforms, I was drafted into the incident response for the Aurora incident, for which I received a Founders Award in 2010.I developed and delivered a set of packaging training sessions to other Googlers who had a need to distribute software on Goobuntu.During my time on this team I was promoted for my work.

Responsible for the maintenance and management of Mongoogle, a now retired bespoke distributed monitoring system that was used for black box and white box monitoring of some of Google's Corporate and Production servers. This was a Python code base, which made heavy use of threading. I was responsible for the maintenance of the code, management of releases , and systems administration of the Linux servers on which the code ran.I also participated in a global oncall rotation responsible for all of Google's Corporate services. I eventually became tech lead for this small team.

I am a volunteer system administrator for Linux Australia, the organisation that provides the legal umbrella for linux.conf.au as well as providing assistance with a number of other Free and Open Source software related activities.

I worked in Professional Services, assisting with the ongoing development and maintanence of the Australian Taxation Office's Internet gateway. The role required a Highly Protected security clearance.

I was a member of the linux.conf.au 2005 organising committee. I was a general dogsbody for most of the leadup to the conference, with my main contributions being to peripheral work on the conference program and website, with a sizable technical contribution to the conference infrastructure setup and administration immediately preceding and during the conference.

I assisted with the management and maintenance of a Defence Signals Directorate (DSD) accredited highly redundant Internet gateway, serving multiple Australian Federal Government agencies.I worked in the Network Operations Centre, and was responsible for resolving escalated client faults, planning and implementation of complex client change requests and troubleshooting complex TCP/IP networking issues.I also developed and implemented an automated Debian GNU/Linux installation process, using FAI, for deploying infrastructure.This position required a Top Secret (NV) clearance from the Australian Protective Service, a Secret clearance from the Australian Customs Service and a Highly Protected clearance from the Australian Taxation Office.

Asia Online acquired Brisbane Internet Technology, and I worked on the company's ambitious Accounting, Billing and Customer Care project, which endeavoured to migrate all of the acquired ISPs over to a common, custom built CRM and billing system consisting of Vantive and Portal Infranet.I led the team responsible for the maintenance of infrastructure this system ran on, and provided third-level technical support for it.

I was responsible for managing the employees responsible for the technical operations of the Internet Service Provider, and setting the general technical direction of the company's infrastructure. I was also an escalation point for technical support, and assisted with general systems administration duties, as well as some software development of internal and client-facing web-based systems.I initially started as the first employee of the company, and bought into the business after one of the other Directors reduced his shareholding.
