Building on over two decades of research on computing systems and programming languages, I design and implement practical software systems. I seek to develop artifacts that not only reflect a principled understanding of the requirements, but also are a delight to use and age gracefully as those requirements change. I usually build foundational services that enable other developers to be successful, but I am equally comfortable with web-based user interfaces. It helps that I have a keen eye for detail and good design. Since technology is a tool for humans and not an end in itself, I also explain my work in talks and articles. Sometimes, I even tell stories about the larger world we live in, most recently reflecting on the dehumanizing and punitive use of AI.
