I’ve taken a year out from helping other teams deliver and improve to focus on my own improvement and enjoyment. Studying for a graduate diploma in Mechatronics at Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec) has been a rewarding experience and an unexpectedly interesting insight into how tertiary education looks from a “mature student’s” perspective. It’s also had the additional benefit of firming up my view on how agile, devops and other modern management techniques can be applied in the hardware engineering as well as the software engineering space.

Responsible for all software development and the provision of Level 3 support for the New Zealand Customs Service, reporting to the CIO. During this time, I:* Managed and grew a team of 40+ developers, testers, architects, line managers, scrum masters, sys admins and coaches;* Successfully rolled out an agile delivery model;* Designed and delivered an extensive automated test platform (Java / Gherkin / Jenkins) which reduced test execution time from months down to hours for a $100M government project;* Established a Continuous Improvement culture and raised the profile of NZ Customs IT with the wider business and the Wellington IT sector;* Delivered a large number of projects within annually pre-agreed OpEx and CapEx budgets.

Responsible for product design, delivery, operations and direction for BATS, the Barclays’ Foreign Exchange high frequency, low latency, algorithmic trading and pricing platform. This involved:* Successful Project and Development Management of multiple concurrent projects. * Maintaining healthy relationships with stakeholders, both internal teams from across the bank, and external suppliers and partners;* Architectural Design: scaling out a legacy system from running across ~30 servers to over 150 servers distributed across 10 data centres globally, while maintaining stringent performance requirements and reducing support overhead;* Developing and Testing of key components and providing technical specifications and assistance to developers (Java); * Management and delivery of hundreds of fault free releases;* System Administration (Database, Linux and otherwise), including Hardware definition and procurement; * Recruiting and training developers from graduate to senior level, and technical roles such as Release Manager, Head of Support and Test Lead;* Mentoring and providing technical expertise to support developers.

Lead developer and researcher on a number of Inter-varsity collaborative projects such as myGrid, a Bioinformatics research platform. This included design and development of prototype applications and presenting at UK and International Conferences.

While working for Excel Consultants I was responsible for VHDL Design and Testing for client ASIC projects. While most of my time was spent designing, modelling and testing a hardware implementation of a communications protocol I also had the opportunity to use some early FPGAs and the ARC custom CPU design system.
