I am the Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) lead for the restoration of the aquatic environment in the Detroit and St. Clair Rivers. Water quality and aquatic ecosystem health were highly degraded due to decades of effluent from industrial and municipal sources flowing into each river. The rivers were identified as an "Area of Concern (AOC)" and under the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement between Canada and the United States. As the lead for ECCC in Canada, I am responsible for coordinating scientific experts required to set realistic and measurable restoration goals, undertake specific studies and monitor progress towards the goals. I also create partnerships and negotiate restoration agreements with local conservation and non-government organizations to implement actions that support the restoration goals. The position requires a great deal of planning, relationship building and administration. I lead the habitat restoration and monitoring and research working groups for both rivers. These working groups are instrumental in ensuring the restoration goals are being implemented and there is sound science to support decision-making on progress.I also have worked extensively with Indigenous communities and have worked in Zimbabwe on wildlife conservation and rural development projects where I learned first-hand the importance and value of community engagement regarding development plans and conservation of natural resources. I would welcome the chance to return to Africa again before the end of my working career.
