About April Yoder, Phd
I am a storyteller and writer, stakeholder manager, systems thinker, and expert in the development of global industries. Or, as Pi.ai described me, I'm “a historian with mad writing skills who can untangle ethical quandaries like a pro.” The responsible AI practitioner in me warns you against accepting Pi's answer without evidence, but I have receipts! My past experience centered on baseball and democracy, but I'm extending my expertise to work on tech/AI to support democracy. I use ethnography, policy and textual analysis, contextual inquiry, and interviews to understand human experiences and interactions with the world so I can solve problems, or at least answer complex questions. I integrate quantitative analysis as applicable. I have a decade of experience juggling my research and writing roles with my primary role as a teacher/professor. Teaching, at least when I do it, is identifying outcomes—where my clients (students) need to go—and then designing experiences to get them there, along with the metrics to measure their progress. I’m a cross-functional product strategy and development team in one. This approach—identifying outcomes and designing systems to get there—informs my engagement with AI, too. Rather than asking “what will the future of writing look like with AI?” and worrying about how AI tools will impact my students' writing or even my own, I started creating that future. I created processes for integrating AI tools in my writing classes and evaluated AI policies, practices, and frameworks as part of CAIDP's AI Policy Clinics. I'm looking for opportunities to contribute to the responsible development, deployment, and integration of AI tools and systems with my "mad" skills analyzing historical patterns and communicating complex ideas to diverse audiences.
