As a Watershed Specialist at IDEM, I manage and track the progress of projects that receive grant funding through Section 319 of the Clean Water Act in the Northwest Region and Lake Michigan Coastal Region of Indiana. These projects target nonpoint source pollution mitigation to promote cleaner water in Indiana. In partnership with the Indiana DNR, I worked as a team to develop an approvable policy and strategy to address septic systems in the Lake Michigan coastal zone as required by CZARA 6217, securing $1MM of annual funding for IDEM's Nonpoint Source Program. This role requires the understanding of federal and state environmental policies, including proposed legislation, as well as analyzing and interpreting key ESG data metrics. These data include indicators of water quality and water usage, as well key DEI metrics, such as the local racial and socio economic composition and access to public transportation. In addition, I serve on the Indiana Master Watershed Stewards Advisory Committee, the Indiana Rural Wastewater Task Force, the Lake Michigan Coastal Program Advisory Board, and the Septic System Coordination Working Group.

I evaluated and analyzed assigned cases, recommended a course of action to resolve case, including researching past violations, crafting of documents, negotiating of settlements and serving as a witness at hearing. The position required a thorough knowledge of the state laws and rules for wastewater, drinking water, storm water and wetlands.

As an environmental technician my primary role was to collect water, soil, and air samples utilizing a variety of different sampling methods. Water samples were collected using submersible water pumps and purged to stabilization monitored by a multiparameter water quality sonde. Additionally, I assisted in the sampling of residential homes for air quality impairments, including volatile organic compounds. I oversaw the safety and progress of contractors at a hazardous waste remediation site, including assisting in bore sampling of contaminated concrete. After each sampling activity I drafted sampling reports for client review. I ensured the efficiency and effectiveness of remediation facilities through monthly inspections. I participated in monthly safety meetings to analyze company safety standards in the field and office. I was also responsible for the safe driving and maintenance of company vehicles and performed those duties without incident.

I was trained in a variety of fish and macroinvertebrate sampling techniques. I became proficient in electrofishing and netting using battery-powered backpack anodes and generator-powered boat anodes. I gained practice in water chemistry sampling and in-field data collection. Additionally, I developed greater experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), specifically ArcMaps. I became proficient in data entry and quality control. Lastly, this internship gave me the opportunity to train in swift water rescue, as well the tools to prepare and act in case of an emergency.
