About Ara Bolander
I am pursuing a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University, where I work as a Graduate Student Researcher and a Graduate Research Assistant in the Jain Research Lab. My research focuses on thermal management and control of thermal systems, with an emphasis on developing a graph-based modeling framework for transient exergy analysis of aircraft. I have a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Bachelor of Arts in Russian Studies from Brigham Young University, where I graduated with honors in 2022.As a Graduate Student Researcher, I collaborate with a team of researchers and professors to design, implement, and test novel methods and algorithms for modeling and optimizing the performance and efficiency of thermal systems in various applications. I use software engineering practices, such as version control, documentation, and testing, to ensure the quality and reliability of the code and data. I also communicate and work with a research team to make improved product design decisions and aid in material selection validation by analyzing material properties on a finite element basis. I am passionate about applying my skills and knowledge to solve real-world challenges and contribute to the advancement of science and technology. I am eager to learn from and collaborate with diverse and talented peers and mentors in the field of mechanical engineering. I believe I can bring a unique perspective and experience to the team, as I have a background in Russian studies and have participated in a global engineering outreach project in Peru, where I developed and tested an emissions sensor for rural cookstoves.

With a team of five engineering students, I developed, prototyped, and tested an emissions sensor (CO2, CO, PM) for use in rural Peruvian homes where open-fire cookstoves are still in use. This emissions sensor was designed with the goal of helping NGO’s donate cleaner and more efficient cookstoves and fuel sources for use in rural Peru. Together with my team, we implemented this project in Lima, Peru in 2022.
