Michael Araki is a Lecturer (equivalent to Assistant Professor) at the UNSW Business School. He holds a PhD in management, with extensive training and expertise in psychometrics (e.g., scale development), econometrics (e.g., panel data analysis), and theory development. His research has been published in high-impact journals such as The Lancet, Research Policy, and Journal of Business Venturing, and has been featured by media outlets including the BBC and Forbes. He also serves on the Editorial Review Board of the Small Business Economics Journal.Michael’s overarching research program explores the role of knowledge in the flourishing of individuals, organizations, and societies. This interest has driven his research on polymathy—the ability and disposition to acquire and integrate in-depth knowledge across diverse domains—and its connection to lifelong learning, creativity, and innovative entrepreneurship. He also investigates the role of macro-level elements, e.g., institutions, networks, ecosystems, and policy, in shaping these phenomena. Furthermore, Michael is spearheading the development of the Atlas of Human Range, a comprehensive tool designed to help individuals in their journey from understanding what is special about themselves to achieving their full potential and contributing meaningfully to society.Prior to his academic career, Michael worked in the private sector as a manager of small businesses, SAP solutions architect, business consultant, teacher, and flight crew member.--Current research projects:1) Polymathy as a driver of innovation: construct and scale development: This project involves an effort to develop the construct of polymathy--the ability and disposition to obtain and integrate knowledge across diverse domains--and examine its role in innovative and entrepreneurial behaviors. We are also developing a new scale of polymathic orientation, which refers to the dispositional part of polymathy, and emphasizes the qualities of breadth, depth, and integration along one’s developmental trajectory. 2) Entrepreneurial Ecosystems, Institutions and Innovation: This project investigates how institutions and policies affect the development of new knowledge creation, innovation networks, entrepreneurial ecosystems, and high-growth entrepreneurship.
