Leaders in Freshman Engineering (LIFE) is an interdisciplinary engineering program consisting of first-year undergraduate engineering students, hosted by the Engineering Student Council at UCI. I was fortunate enough to have participated in the program, wherein I gained engineering project experience through the year-long Shark Tank-style competition. Each team in the competition set out to follow the engineering design process in order to develop a product prototype to solve a real world problem. While ultimately coming short of winning the competition, the opportunity to present in front of a panel of experienced professionals was a remarkable learning opportunity. Through the ANTrepreneur Center’s goal of expanding its resources for students interested in innovation, I had the opportunity to create and manage a self-directed Fab Lab, giving students free hands-on access to 3D printers (Bambu Lab X1-Carbon Combo, Ultimaker 2+, Flashforge Creator Pro) and a Muse Core Laser Cutter. To keep things running smoothly, I developed an inventory system that tracked supplies and helped reduce waste. I also created training manuals, making it easy for users to learn about the equipment through QR codes that linked directly to guides. It was an exciting project where I got to blend creativity with technical skills, all while empowering others to explore and innovate.
