Currently directing the second year of a three year project to enhance the NRCS soils map for Fort Bliss using digital mapping techniques and field verification. The team is using a DEM derived from LiDAR in a 1-m grid covering 2,849,002,849 square meters. The most successful part of the project is the ability to map Copia soils (coppice dunes that number in the millions) to a resolution of 1-2 m, something that was impossible to do without digital techniques. This has broken up numerous soil complexes. The goal is to provide better data and modeling of plant and animal resources, and wind erosion, which will allow for better management of the base resources.Completed a data recovery project excavating three sites at Fort Bliss, Texas. Two of the sites were burned rock midden sites, one located in the southern part of Fort Bliss and the other in the Sacramento Mountains. The latter may have contained Apache features based on the dates. The third site was a series of small hearths in a dune field near the base of the Sacramento Mountains. While there were few diagnostic artifacts, radiocarbon dates suggest that some of the features may have been Apache in origin, or possibly one of the other early historic groups like the Manso.
