About Ray Makin
Co-founder of Provan and Makin in 1980 and architect to a wide range of award winning projects over the years. Previous experience as a part time tutor at Manchester Metropolitan University (architecture and interior design) and Cardiff University (interior design) Member of Manchester Historic Buildings and Conservation Areas Panel (advisory body to the City) from 1977 until 2011, including a total of 14 years as either Chairman or vice-chairman.I am an architect "Accredited in Conservation" by the RIBA. To be honest, most of my clients couldn't care less about this accolade and are more than delighted with the work we do for them in the re-use of their Listed Buildings, but we are aware that there are lots of organisations for who this 'tick box' has to be done. See our web-site for conservation projects with a purpose. Recently updated to reflect the scope of work done.Specialties: Extensive work on the commercial restoration and re-use of historic buildings. Presenter of a seminar on 'Working with Listed Buildings and understanding current legislation" This latter was superceded by a presentation entitled "Designing in the Historic Environment" taken to many professional teams and organisations. Received an award from The Institute of Structural Engineers for this and toured it around the British Isles including Guernsey and Jersey for the Institute.A founder member of Manchester Civic Society and Chairman for two years before political infighting slowly turned it from polished performance to a farce and then to a tragedy. Hopefully people who care will take up and rebuild what was a respected organisation.
