I have been working with children with different learning needs for almost ten years. In the ten years that I have worked with them, I have played the roles of a shadow teacher, resource teacher, reading and math interventionist, social thinking therapist, collaborator, mentor, coach and friend. I have worked with them in their various abilities: rooting for their high energy, active imagination, independent spirit and differing perspectives.I have enriched my professional life through continued studies and research of new and effective trends and strategies in the education of these special individuals. I have worked with some of the most capable teachers who in turn became my mentors in social thinking, Understanding by Design (UBD) perspective, adaptation pedagogy, and the true and challenging practice of inclusion. My latest research entails developing language-based critical thinking skills of individuals with autism using social thinking. Results indicate significant improvement in these areas showing that social thinking is effective in developing critical thinking skills. My latest book, Kids in Action Reading and Writing, uses music, arts, and movement in teaching phonics and writing.I hope to teach and to be taught anew.
