Coastal Wetland Research InternNational Park Service Feb 2013 - Aug 2013United StatesMy second internship (project internship) involved the effects of sea level rise on the elevation and size of coastal wetlands. This research was done within the National Seashore at Cape Cod, MA where I performed hypsometric surveys using RTK GPS and GIS analyses on coastal wetlands to enhance the knowledge and understanding of these areas in relation to anthropogenic stress, Climate Change and Sea Level Rise. I collected data on the current elevation of several wetlands within the National Park and created Digital Elevation Models to compare the current data with past data. I created several maps using GIS for the National Park Service in which was made visible what the measured difference in elevation was over a span of 11 years. The conclusion of my report was that some of the wetlands had a net increase in elevation, but most had a net decrease. Point of discussion was the reliability of LiDAR data. The error margin for LiDAR on wetlands was estimated too large. Therefore I had to conclude that the historic LiDAR data I worked with was unusable for reliable analysis and future measurement of wetland elevation. -
Marine Mammal Research InternFreelance Researcher Malcolm Barradell Feb 2012 - Jul 2012Ramsey Sound, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, Wales, UkUnder the supervision of Malcolm Barradell I performed an Internship in Pembrokeshire Coast National Park into the distribution of Harbour Porpoises in Ramsey Sound, between the mainland and Ramsey Island. This research was necessary to investigate the viability of a pilot 'tidal turbine' project. We gathered data from land based observations to get a view on the where and how these animals migrate within this area. We created a database using Microsoft Excel and Access. Maps were created using GIS to show the daily migration direction of Harbour Porpoises in and around Ramsey Sound.
