At Ultimaker, I'm developing future Ultimaker products. These are usually pieced together from various building blocks, as developed by teams of skilled engineers. In my current project I fulfill two roles. One is to define and mature the physical interfaces between system modules, to assist industrialization by making sound DFM and DFA choices, to monitor vendor selection and communication and align on (human) resources. The other role is leading a (small) team responsible for the engineering of the complete machine's frame and exterior. For the latter, I pursue a user-centered, value-adding, quality experience focus. My approach here is very pragmatic, hands-on and aimed towards facing and addressing the biggest unknowns first.

Responsible for managing R&D activities for Ultimaker S-line products.

Main achievement: responsible for designing the system behaviour (software and firmware) of the Material Station, and leading a small team in engineering all components related to filament handling (the actual moving of the coiled stock material of our FDM printers from spool to printhead).

At Job Kneppers, I worked as an Industrial Design Engineer, for all kinds of businesses, in a wide variety of markets. Past projects include development of a completely new surgical tool, test equipment for multinational food industries, OTC (over the counter) medical products, redesigning a corporate coffee machine, automotive component optimization (FEM-driven), novel radar equipment design, and many others.I especially enjoyed working on mechanical puzzles and products with seemingly conflicting requirements. The company's specialty is offering tailored design/engineering services, that are backed up by working prototypes, built in-house. Within a small team, various disciplines are covered and complete mechatronical solutions are offered.

My responsibilities at Milk Design included doing RCA (root cause analysis) of service issues with production models, developing and testing various component redesigns/optimizations, the design and engineering (in cooperation with colleagues and external parties) of new strollers and accessories, and performing production inspections at a manufacturing facility in China.Related brands: Joolz and Firstwheels (strollers)

Designing and engineering of personal mobility products, including bicycles, recumbent bicycles, kick bikes and pushbikes and all kinds of related parts and accessories.It was really nice to work in this company that is driven by creating and selling healthy mobility products. This focus and dedication could be found back in many employees' personal interests and hobbies, which created a really positive and healthy atmosphere both during and outside of office hours.

Design of a folding lowracer recumbent bicycle.The final design combined ease of use (folding, carrying and unfolding) with supreme riding speed and great ergonomics. Key to the success was an intricate CAD model, coupled to an Excel spreadsheet, to manipulate key design parameters of the main frame hinges' geometry and their moving actions. By extensive optimization, a design was found that is easy to fold, easy to carry, has a minimal weight penalty and above all: an amazing folding action to watch.

During my studies, I took some time off to do an internship at Job Kneppers. It was great to collaborate, work on and just see (parts of) very interesting design projects in various stages of their development process. After completing the 6 month (full-time) internship, I continued to work here part-time up until my Masters' graduation period.I also learnt my way around the lathe and mill, and enjoyed creating functional, mechanical prototypes.
