Given the recent change in eligibility requirements for Emergency Medicine (EM) physicians to become EMS board certified, we are exploring the availability of EMS rotations for medical students, the presence or absence of EMS topics in regular EM clerkships, and whether a correlation exists between the presence of an EMS elective and an EMS fellowship at an institution. Project is currently in the development stage.

As one of two co-presidents for the Emergency Medicine Interest Group (EMIG) at the Penn State College of Medicine, I am responsible for coordinating Emergency Medicine-related networking events, skills nights, and lunch lectures with other interest groups. I also serve as an intermediate between Emergency Medicine faculty/attending physicians/residents and the student body. I will be working this upcoming year on expanding the collaborative opportunities available between our College of Medicine and Beaver Stadium EMS in University Park, PA in an attempt to allow as many students as possible to experience working as a medical staff member under the direction of a physician at Penn State football games.

A collaboration between medical students and high school students, the PULSE program is a semester long academic course taught at the medical center from 4:00 to 6:30 pm on Mondays in the fall. PULSE aims to cultivate interest in medicine and healthcare by introducing high school students to medical topics. As a small group facilitator, I review the clinical presentation of patient cases and discuss the evaluation and treatment plan of each patient with my group of students each week.

I partnered with a global health and wellness company and worked to help others better their lives by incorporating nutrition into their lifestyle while gaining energy and losing weight in the process.

I worked in a cognitive psychology lab with Dr. Richard Carlson, my Honors advisor and senior thesis advisor. For my senior thesis, I developed a program using E-Prime and collected data on 46 subjects regarding the encoding and retrieval of prospective memory cues. I presented my final thesis as a poster and oral combined presentation at the Psi Chi Undergraduate Research Conference and received second place overall.

As a member of the Task Force, I participate in engaging and crucial conversations with other student leaders, campus administrators, State College officials, and other individuals with experience and a vested interest in Greek Life and the future of the University. I also serve on several subcommittees. The Task Force hopes to present recommendations regarding the state of Greek Life and its relationship with the University and surrounding community to the President of the University by the end of the Spring semester of 2016.

As the course coordinator, I plan and execute all aspects of this four hour practical lab each Monday evening. This includes, but is not limited to, communicating with paid and volunteer teaching assistants, reviewing and approving lesson plans, planning and distributing lesson topics based on chapter(s) covered in lecture, weekly emails to students and teaching assistants, creation and dispersion of lab quizzes, creation and dispersion of TA and student matrices detailing the topics covered in each lab, grading assignments and entering grades into the online ANGEL system, managing grades and topics online in MyBradyLab, employee scheduling, keeping continuing education up to date for each teaching assistant in an online system, overseeing all actions of the Equipment Coordinator, planning and executing a Fire & Extrication Lab each semester, and planning and executing practical testing with State personnel per NREMT standards.

I served as an undergraduate research assistant for Dr. Frank Hillary in the Brain Behavior and Neuroplasticity Lab at Penn State. Our research focuses primarily on neural connectivity and recovery from traumatic brain injury using fMRI. My responsibilities differ depending on recent projects and research proposals, but recruitment of individuals to participate in our studies is always a consistent responsibility. I participate in weekly meetings to determine the ongoing goals and direction of our research, I am also trained in administration of our series of Neuropsychology tests to subjects, and I am in the process of learning how to code and recode MRI data into a form we can analyze.
