Dr. Green is a physician-scientist focused on the development of therapies for repair and remyelination. He serves as Chief of the Division of Neuroimmunology and Glial Biology in the Department of Neurology at UCSF. His team consists of more than 20 laboratories and groups investigating the causes, treatment and leading the fight to develop cures for multiple sclerosis and other related diseases. The group continues to be dedicated to breakthrough developments and spans the field from biomarker development to clinical trials to translationally directed molecular and cellular neuroscience of glia to the basic epidemiology and biology of MS and other inflammatory diseases of the CNS. Under his leadership the group has expanded its focus to investigate new methods for understanding infectious and inflammatory diseases of the brain and developmental and autoimmune disorders of the CNS that lead to loss of regulation of normal glial cell biology. He co-leads the Innovation program for Remyelination and Repair with his long term scientific collaborator Dr. Jonah Chan. Dr. Green has led major programs in translational neuroscience dedicated to the biological validation of biomarkers fro the express purpose of advancing therapies and for better understanding the biology of MS. He led the first successful clinical trial in remyelination in MS published in The Lancet in 2017 (ReBUILD) and currently leads or co-leads at least 4 other clinical trials in remyelination. His lab efforts extend from cellular and molecular work focused on myelination to transgenic models for better understanding new biomarkers, body fluid based based biomarkers and validation of new biomarkers for use in human studies. Dr. Green is also Medical Director of the UCSF MS and Neuroinflammation Center – one of the largest clinics of its kind in the United States which cares for more than 7000 patients.
