About Aria Austin
A graduate of William & Mary with a B.A. in Government and a minor in English Literature on the pre-law track, I am drawn to opportunities that allow me to enact effective change in the community I serve in and beyond. My experiences as a leader and advocate in the realms of academia, the fine & performing arts, and mental health ignited a fire in me to work on meaningful and lasting change through policy in order to protect the future of our democracy. I currently have the honor of serving the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a Legislative Aide for Senator John Fetterman. “A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don’t necessarily want to go, but ought to be.” – Rosalynn Carter, former First Lady of the United StatesAs a classically trained vocalist and experienced performer, I have a flair for alternative R&B, pop, and pop/rock. As a songwriter, I believe in the power of human connection and tend to explore the complexities of relationships, using my music as a bridge to help others feel less alone. I love performing across the DMV as a soprano in the grammy-award winning Washington Chorus, as well as solo under Aria Austin Music. "Music is the vernacular of the human soul." - Geoffrey Latham

Winter Fellow, W&M Washington Center
William & Mary's Washington Center, through a competitive application process, provides students with the opportunity to study in DC while integrating excellent academics and experiential learning to produce high-impact opportunities for students. During the DC Winter Seminars, students earn 3 W&M credits through an accelerated course that combines course work with seminar-style discussions led by a W&M professor featuring topical experts via networking and guest lectures. Fall 2020 I was accepted to be a Winter Fellow for the Power, Politics, and Persuasion (PPP) seminar. This seminar was designed for individuals interested in learning more about the art and science of influence in organizations. At the conclusion of the seminar, students would be able to (1) diagnose the true distribution of PPP in an organization, (2) being building a professional network, and (3) develop influence techniques to be able to resolve conflict more effectively, foster cooperation, and lead change.
Research Fellow, Civic Agency Project
The Civic Agency Project (CAP) is an undergraduate think tank at William & Mary focused on issues related to civic engagement and democratic leadership. During my time in CAP, I decided to focus on poverty issues in Williamsburg, VA, for Williamsburg has one of the highest poverty rates in Virginia. After meeting with leaders in the community who are involved in addressing poverty issues, I zoned in on researching the living-wage. Ultimately, I conducted a phenomenological study assessing the need for a living-wage for university workers at William & Mary.

Co-Chair, The Academic Diversity Project (Adp)
The Academic Diversity Project (ADP) was a component of Student Assembly's "The Buck Stops Here" plan to tackle systemic and racial injustices at William & Mary. Working in tandem with SA's Secretary of Academic Affairs, Chief of Staff, faculty members, and select students, I worked to develop suggestions and implementation strategies for structural changes to W&M academia. This included, but was not limited to: implicit bias training for new and current faculty, diversified curriculums, and student representation on hiring boards. Additionally, the ADP supported the Curriculum Enhancement Group, working to gather student testimonials and identify additional faculty supporters and sponsors.Within ADP, I was the team lead for the Beyond the Curriculum subcommittee where we worked towards all student orgs and departments having a DEI statement, providing them with the necessary context and information as needed. I personally worked on drafting the DEI statement for William & Mary's Government Department which is linked below.
