• Responsible for daily inspection of animal collection and making necessary changes in dietary needs due to body condition and health• Monitored the well-being of large carnivores, primates, reptiles, and birds by administering proper diets, vaccinations, vitamins, and medications • Trained large carnivores and birds using operant conditioning• Demonstrates respect and care for the living collection• Identify maintenance issues and correct or repair each as required, reporting non-correctable maintenance issues, including potential safety hazards, to the Head Keeper or Maintenance Supervisor• Researched and instigated breeding of animals; researched scientific journals, corresponded with other institutes and private specialists; observed and recognized a variety of courtship behaviors; created environments inductive of breeding; provided proper care of pregnant animals• Maintained clean and organized exhibits, holding areas, service areas, and equipment in addition to providing species-specific enrichment • Made decisions consistent with the Zoo policies & procedures when required• Interacted with the public by participating in keeper talks, tours, and animal demonstrations• Supervised the horticulture department by identifying proper browse, and following requirements and protocol• Landscaped the zoo grounds by mowing, planting, growing, and harvesting new plants in and around animal enclosures• Supervised and instructed volunteers and intern staff, and provided training for all new employees
