Desertification of semi-arid Mediterranean old-fields, the influence of substrate on soil properties and vegetation succession (supervisor: Erik Cammeraat)The focus of this research was on the identification of the effects of two different substrates on vegetation succession and soil properties after land abandonment. Furthermore the influence of north and south facing slopes and vegetated and bare patches was taken into account. The reasearch plots were situated on abandoned agricultural fields of various age on marl and shale substrates in South-East Spain (Murcia). Important aspects of the research included:Setting up a reasearch plan Fieldwork in spain (collecting vegetation records and soil samples)Analysis in the laboratory (aggregate stability, pH, EC, carbon and nitrogen content)Data analysis (GLM using R)Writing thesis

I was a board member of GAOS, a studie society that organizes activities and arranges books for Earth Science students. As president, I've led the board in the orginization of various activities (e.g. ice skating, climbing, christmas gala), fundraising, organising symposia and the introduction period etc. Furthermore I have prepared and guided all the board meetings and had overall responsibility.

The Programme Committee Earth Sciences monitors the quality of the bachelor and master studyprogramme, proposes improvements and gives specific recommendations on courses. I represented the bachelor students for two years, and the master students for one year. In this last year I also functioned as vice-president.
