Symantec SAAS PlatformFor the past few years my focus has been on providing shared services to transition a wider range of Symantec products to cloud service offerings. In many ways a logical extension of my previous role in the company. Our platform seeks to provide common building blocks for fast development, control planes for internal engineering teams, as well as product and transactional consistency for our customers and partners.The platform itself consists of a suite of largely Java services, backed by open source projects and AWS managed services. Our globally distributed micro-service architecture focuses on scalability, data privacy and reliabilty.

My career at Symantec began by working on Symantec Endpoint Protection, a cloud-managed endpoint security service. This hybrid architecture leveraged a centrally managed, multi-tenant application layer to manage endpoints through bidirectional communication that facilitated policy synchronization and enforcement, command execution and active data collection. My primary subject the agent for which I managed a team and led the design. This leveraged my C++ background, however, I was also responsible for a number of the key hosted .Net services with which the agents were directly communicating for functions. The agent itself allowed for a number of product plugins, while assuming duties of reliable message synchronization, software updates, feature addition/removal, diagnostics and log retrieval, etc.. This project also sought to create a platform model for endpoint specific functions that saw the development of several additional plugin features. This project ultimately helped me develop a unique perspective toward product integration patterns, particularly for device agents communicating with cloud infrastructure.

I joined the ranks at SEZ developing in C++ within a department of roughly fourty programmers. Our focus was on the ongoing development and maintenance of business critical process software. In this object-oriented and multi-threaded MS environment, quality assurance and version control remain foremost. I quickly found my niche in data collection and storage and focused on the slow process of converting various applications to an ADO and XML driven middle-ware solution centered on the local registry and MSDE. My final time at SEZ found me developing internal process tools for configuration deployment and workflow management, leveraging the latest .Net technologies. My responsibilities included:1. Use Case Analysis and Object Oriented Design with UML. 2. Development in C++ using Microsoft Visual Studio 5/7 and Borland CBuilder5.3. Technical review of SQL strategy and implementations.4. Configuration and Release Management 5. Productivity tool development using C# and ASP.Net

Axia initially employed me as a database developer to aid in their transition from developing web sites to online business applications. As the company grew so did my role and I soon found myself leading a team of developers through the design and development of 4-12 month project cycles. Working with content partners around the world we developed enterprise applications for both corporate and government clients including Microsoft, Oracle Europe, Aventis, and the British, Italian, and Scottish governments. Before leaving Axia I developed an architecture to facilitate rapid development and deployment of web applications. This framework and accompanying tool suite included methodologies for code standards and re-usability, while offering foundations such as authentication and permission models. My responsibilities included: 1. Analysis of business requirements and needs assessment 2. Documentation of (n-tier) architectural design and project development path 3. Programming in SQL/TSQL, VB COM, MTS, ASP, and DHTML4. Team management and mentoring of junior development staff 5. Qualifying corporate strategic technical direction
