About Arihant Singh

I'm a rising sophomore at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. As a Hodson Trust Scholar, I will be majoring in biomedical engineering at the Whiting School of Engineering, and I hope to combine my engineering experience with a pre-med pathway. My goal is to apply computer science and engineering within the medical field, with the final goal of becoming a neurologist and conducting research into mechanisms behind neurological disorders.

Prototyping And Computational Engineering @ Parkinetics
    Parkinetics Jan 2024 - Present
Parkinetics is a Biomedical Engineering project seeking to develop an at-home longitudinal monitoring system for patients with Parkinson's. I focus on prototyping and data processing, namely with WITMOTION accelerometry sensors, to extract frequency and amplitude data. With such features, both patient-facing and physician-facing interfaces can be developed to help stakeholders better understand the progression of Parkinson's symptoms and the effectiveness of current therapies, including Levodopa treatment. The project has been selected to present at the 2024 International Association for Parkinson's and Related Disorders (IAPRD) and for an IRB at Dr. Stephen Grill's clinic in Columbia, MD (both in summer 2024).
  • Johns Hopkins Medicine
Undergraduate Research Assistant @ Calabresi Lab
Johns Hopkins Medicine Nov 2023 - Present
    Baltimore, Md, Us
Research assistant at the Calabresi Lab at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine focusing on Multiple Sclerosis (MS). During the summer of 2024, I helped conduct Immunohistochemistry (IHC) experiments to visualize demyelination, microglia/macrophage infiltration/inflammation, and T cell infiltration into the optic nerve, spinal cord, and the cerebrum in mice with induced EAE (experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis). I also work in the quantification of mice retina and optic nerve samples using ZEN microscopy software. As of July 2024, I am aiding in a new project attempting to understand how induced inflammation in the spinal cord (through LPS injections) drives oligodendrocyte loss (and thus demyelination), along with infiltration and inflammation of T cells and microglia/macrophages. The gene NLRX1 is a potential therapeutic target for the project, as it may play an anti-inflammatory role in MS progression by countering oxidative stress and cytokine release.

    Student Trainee
Kennedy Krieger Institute Jun 2024 - Aug 2024
    Baltimore, Md, Us
I shadow and work under Dr. Siddharth Gupta, a Pediatric Epilepsy Specialist, during his weekly clinics and during his Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) rounds. I am priviledged to observe and assist him in working with patients who have sustained birth-related injuries or have genetic conditions giving rise to epilepsy, with the goal of significantly reducing seizures to reduce risk of Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) or accidents during ADLs.
  • Boston University
    Research Intern
    Boston University Jul 2022 - Apr 2023
    Boston, Ma, Us
Researcher at Boston University’s Research in Science and Engineering (RISE) Practicum, a highly competitive summer research program with a focus on Computational Neurobiology. Undertook a research project aiming to improve methods of diagnosis and non-invasive treatment of Central Neuropathic Pain (CNP), a neurological disorder affecting nearly 10% of Americans. Refined the project under guidance of Dr. Marianne Bezaire and presented at the RISE Summer Symposium while pursuing expansion remotely.
  • Summer Stem Institute (Ssi)
    Student Researcher
Summer Stem Institute (Ssi) Jun 2021 - Sep 2021
This program provided me an opportunity to learn and apply concepts relating to machine learning, statistics, and data science research.
