I am an academic in International Relations, currently serving as the Head of the Department of International Relations at Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jawa Timur. My specialised focus is on the international diplomacy of cities, which often falls beyond the spectrum of mainstream state-to-state relations discourse. As a lecturer, I like to bring an egalitarian approach to pedagogy, engaging students as thinking partners and emphasising the proximity of International Relations issues to everyday life.Besides, I am a keen advocate for intercity diplomacy, with over five years of experience as a sister city expert for the Surabaya City Government. My work includes analysing the opportunities and challenges of potential foreign city partnerships and providing evaluations of ongoing sister city initiatives. In this role, I also facilitate meetings between the government and other institutions such as embassies, consulates, universities, and think tanks.In 2014, I was honoured to be named one of 60 Young Leaders for Indonesia by McKinsey Indonesia. In 2020, I was awarded the Australia Awards Alumni Grant Scheme for my cultural project, the Surabaya-Sydney Language Festival. Within the same year, I was also selected as one of 80 international scholars and policy practitioners to receive the Kautilya Fellowship from the India Foundation.Aside from regularly publishing academic journal articles, I have also published 3 books, 2 edited books, 2 book chapters, and numerous op-eds in international and national portals such as The Diplomat, The Conversation, Jawa Pos, Disway, and Radar Surabaya. I also have some experience as an invited speaker at international-level conferences such as the Bay of Bengal Conversation (Bangladesh), Sydney Language Festival (Australia), and Rise of Asia Conference (France).As an active collaborator, I believe academia thrives on partnership and collective effort.
