Staff Software Engineer
* Core Data: Created the architecture, design guidelines, documentation standards and supporting tools for Core Data, a key initiative for enabling self-serve data analytics at Brex. This is now the standard way new datasets for self-serve are created and consumed by hundreds of users.* Data migration strategy and tools: Prior to this effort, datasets were rapidly accumulating tech debt due to the difficulty of confidently making changes. I designed and helped build the tools that enabled us to make hundreds of changes to large datasets across the data stack.* End-to-end data pipeline integration tests: Prior to this effort, bad merges were regularly breaking our data pipelines a few times a month. I developed data pipeline integration tests that essentially brought this down to zero. Using a variety of technical methods, these tests were able to validate over 2000 data transformations in Snowflake on every PR in under a minute.* Data pipeline simulator: I created a data pipeline simulator which could calculate Snowflake costs and runtime accurately under different scenarios, enabling us to prove that complex solutions were worth the effort. This was previously difficult to justify.
Principal Software Engineer
* Led the design and successful technical implementation of the Data Engine platform, a critical component of the company's strategy and value proposition. The Data Engine product is used by over 600 customers, contributes to over $23M in ARR, executes 1.7 million jobs per day, and processes over 200 queries per second.* The Data Engine implementation solves the classic problems of running a distributed system at scale with a messaging core. Some of the key concepts we had to master include: Implementing state machines to orchestrate asynchronous systems, harnessing deliver-at-least-once semantics with retry, idempotency and message deduplication, horizontally scaling stateful systems with high efficiency, rebalancing, and designing self-healing distributed systems.* Periscope Data and Sisense merged in 2019. As part of the engineering leadership organization at the SF office, I helped push for an Architecture Discussion series that pulled together senior architects and engineers from the two companies to discuss and make shared decisions on areas such as software development processes, architecture philosophies and multi-tenancy.* I enjoy upleveling engineers when the opportunity arises, through discussions, brainstorms, technical documentation and mentorship.
Software Engineering Manager
* Managed the Customer Data Infrastructure team comprising 6 engineers. We build and maintain Periscope's ETL infrastructure which is used by our customers to extract, transform and load their data into our managed warehouse.* We helped save the company USD 500,000 be optimizing our use of Amazon Redshift via a combination of compression, bin packing and data trimming.* My team under my time released numerous features, including: 1) Tracking and visualizing a directed acyclic graph (DAG) using Ruby on Rails on the backend, and React on the front-end. 2) Introduced a new strategy for transporting data and built that on a Go microservice. 3) Introduced a new end-to-end integration testing framework that significantly increased quality of releases for a critical Go microservice.* First software engineering manager at Periscope.
Co-Founder, Ceo & Cto
* Co-founded QuickSchools. We develop and market a next-generation, cloud-based Student Information System.* Raised USD 1.8m in Series A funding.* Led sales and marketing to acquire over 500 private schools.* Grew team to more than 30 employees located in US, Philippines & Malaysia.* In 2015, successfully secured two California public school district contracts, marking our entry into the US public schools market.Lead development of all technologies at QuickSchools. UI is 100% web-based.- Built on Postgres DB, Java application server and HTML/CSS/JavaScript front-end.- Relies on Amazon Web Services for a variety of services: DynamoDB for a scalable NoSQL - database, S3, EC2, AutoScaling, and CloudWatch.- Integrates with Firebase for real-time data synchronization.- Report Creator: A simple & visual reporting tool that is loved by our users. The key feature is its capability to automatically generate SQL with understood, commonsense assumptions, based on the fields that the user selects.- Messaging: An email, text and voice messaging tool for reliably sending messages to thousands of students and parents. Relies on JMS, Sendgrid, Mailgun & Twilio.- Parallel backup & restore: We automatically spin-up over 10 EC2 instances to quickly backup our entire database in parallel. Same with restore.- Implemented single-command deployment to production servers, allowing for uninterrupted deployments multiple times per day if needed.

The architecture provided a rich interactive experience even over low bandwidth lines, such as with a 56K modem.
