My mom wanted me to be an orthodontist. Instead, my entire career is one degree separated from the patient and oriented to enabling the medical professionals that directly impact patient care and experience. I cut my teeth implementing TEFRA (i.e. DRGs) to hospitals in 1983 and delivering Decision Support (DSS) and Executive Information Systems (EIS) for a boutique health consulting firm. Along the way, US healthcare adopted hospital departmental systems and mandated HIPAA, which morphed into the hospital information system (HIS), which mutated into the EMR, which birthed the HITECH Act and EHRs, which ended up cluttering patient care and choking the patient experience needed by today's Value-based care programs.Today, I use my expertise to deliver and my voice to advocate for the rapid implementation of The Cures Act to eliminate the human-based blocking of patient data and satisfy the technology needs of pioneering Value-based organizations, their providers, and patients. I am drawn to serving the sickest of the sick: patients with chronic conditions and the teams committed to their care.Mom says it's not too late for dental school, but my focus remains true on the patients, the providers, and caregivers.
