As a patient monitor at RWJUH in New Brunswick, my responsibility is to provide one on one constant observation for patients who are at high risk of potential harm or injury towards themselves due to confusion, suicidal ideation, or delirium. I work closely with the nursing staff team to provide support in ensuring patient safety and comfort. Some of my duties and skills learned in this position include:• Observing, monitoring, and periodically recording patient status and behavior• Assisting clinical care technicians and nurses with patient needs such as feeding, bathing and vitals• Developing excellent communication skills• Establishing and displaying teamwork abilities• Responding appropriately and immediately in cases of emergencies• Using methods of verbal intervention to calm patient, redirect aggressive behavior or prevent escalation of conflict• Ability to react quickly to sudden, stressful situations while maintaining a calm composure

• Every other week, after being provided a patient file and case, we worked in groups of three to four in order to diagnose a patient as well as provide a future plan of treatment• We took the time to understand all given complaints, patient history, etc. in order to come to a proper conclusion of a diagnosis and what could have led to it• We were provided weekly pre and post quizzes as well as the opportunity to discuss with medical students and other pre-med students from across the world via YouTube live with Dr. Naqvi leading the discussion
