I work with a post-doctoral fellow on the identification of genes that are potentially implicated in frontotemporal dementia. I have conducted extensive work in immunohistochemical, immunofluroescent, and immunocytochemical staining to identify expression patterns of various genes in control and pathological samples of mice and human brains. I developed and optimized immunostaining protocols in multiple tissue types and conditions. I also ran experiments with primary neuronal and microglial cultures to determine the activity of these cells in vitro, and analyzed data from these experiments to draw conclusions that could translate to potential drug targets for dementia. I have presented my research multiple times at symposiums and seminars through PowerPoint and poster presentations.

I am a tennis instructor at UCLA, working with students of all ages and skill levels. Through both group and individual lessons, I teach students about technique as well as mental game to help my students reach their goals in the sport. I have worked with a diverse audience, including young children, UCLA faculty members, and both domestic and international students. This has given me the opportunity to build strong relationships with people from many different backgrounds and to develop effective communication skills.

I help patients at the Venice Family Clinic navigate the healthcare system by providing information about medical services and insurance. Many patients are underprivileged and require information about programs such as Medi-Cal, MyHealthLA, or other low-cost options for medical care. I provide ways to access resources such as low-cost dental clinics, affordable housing, food banks, and mental health services. I also answer questions about how to qualify for various insurance programs and federal subsidies for health insurance, as well as how to sign up for insurance through Covered California. From many patients, I collect surveys about their experiences with the Venice Family Clinic and share this feedback with the staff. Typically I work for 4 hours each week, speaking to about 50 patients during each shift. Through my work as a Healthcare Navigator, I have developed insight into the obstacles low-income communities face when accessing medical care. While working with patients to assess their needs, I have also gained valuable communication skills that are translatable to both clinical and non-clinical settings.

I worked with a postdoctoral fellow on projects involving intracellular signaling pathways and oncogene activation in aggressive, hormone-resistant prostate cancer. Specifically, we studied tumors expressing cleaved Notch1 intracellular domain coupled with oncogenes. Techniques and procedures included immunohistochemistry, western blotting, tissue culture, bacterial transformation, transfection and virus collection, etc.

I volunteered at the Ronald Reagan and Santa Monica UCLA Medical Centers. I was an essential part of the medical team, providing basic patient care and communicating with other staff members about patient needs. I assisted and observed during procedures in different ICUs and the Emergency Department, in addition to delivering equipment and performing clerical work. Through this internship, I gained valuable clinical skills as well as a deep understanding of the complex interactions at the heart of the modern healthcare system.
