This project discusses and compares various Background Subtraction Techniques which are used to detect moving targets, and are used for both static cameras, such as those on traffic signals, highways, shopping arcades, etc., as well as for moving cameras such as those on UAVs. These techniques were implemented using MATLAB and results were compared with a recent Universal Background Subtraction Technique that helps improve computation by reducing processing time and memory consumption. This technique may find its application in UAVs which have less on-board memory and power compared to terrestrial processing systems. Finally, changes were proposed to the existing algorithm to achieve improved results, i.e., a faster processing speed, reduced memory usage, better noise removal, faster ghost suppression, reduced False Positive Rate, and a better Percentage of Correct Classification.
