Adrian R. Lewis is the David B. Pittaway Professor of Military History at the University of University of Kansas. He has researched and written extensively on war, national security, and military affairs for over twenty years. He has taught at the United States Military Academy, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of North Texas, Denton, where he chaired the Department of History. He has also taught the Strategy and Policy course for the Naval War College. At the University of Kansas Professor Lewis served as the first Director of the Office of Professional Military Graduate Education, an office he helped create. This office worked extensively with the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, creating new, advance degree programs. This included the KU Wounded Warriors Program. Lewis specializes in twentieth century warfare: World War II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and the more recent military operations, including Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. His books and articles are used at West Point, the Command and General Staff College, the Naval War College, and civilian institutions of higher education. The third edition of his book "The American Culture of War: The History of U.S. Military Forces from World War II to Operation Enduring Freedom," was published by Routledge, Winter 2018. His book, "Omaha Beach: A Flawed Victory," published in 2001, is still considered the best analysis available on the Normandy campaign of June 6, 1944. Lewis has served on the Department of the Army, Historical Advisory Committee (March 2003 to March 2007), and led discussions on "The American Culture of War" at the Army Strategic Leadership Development 2-Star Commander's Forum (July 2011). Lewis is a retired Infantry soldier. He served with the 9th Infantry Division and the 2nd Ranger Battalion at Fort Lewis, Washington.
